What is an ISBN number? 

The ISBN number is a ten-number identification given to each book in or out of print by the R.R. Bowker Company's Internation Standard Book Numbering system.  Each bookstore has the R.R. Bowkers Books in Print master catalog listing all books still in print by the publisher(s).  The ISBN number comes in very handy to locate a book and the publisher.  If a bookstore cannot find the book you are looking for it may not be because the book is no longer in print!  The bookstore's copy of Books in Print is outdated and "new" books are not listed, so they just tell you, "Sorry, we can't get the book, it's not in print."  The major chain bookstores usually have up-to-date database files.  So, do your hard-to-find book searching with them and you'll have better results.  Some bookstores on the web specialize in finding hard-to-find books and books no longer in print.  Check those out, too.  Many bookstores use seperate book distributors to supply them with books, and the book you are seeking may not be distributed by that distributor.  So always check other bookstores whenever you are looking to find a book.
